Tom Nerl received his BS in Mathematics from Xavier University in 1986 along with his teaching certification in mathematics, his Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Xavier University in 2004, his Certified Athletic Administrator (C.A.A.) certification in 2007, and his Certified Master Athletic Administrator Certification (C.M.A.A) in 2012.
This is Tom’s 23rd year as a high school athletic director in his 20th year as Director of Athletics for the Mariemont City Schools, and previously served as Purcell Marian High School’s Director of Athletics for three years. Tom served as head baseball coach at Purcell Marian for 16 years, assistant football coach at Purcell Marian for 17 years, assistant football coach at Mariemont for 8 years, head baseball coach at Mariemont for one year, and an Ohio high school basketball official for 15 years. Tom served as the Dean of Students at Purcell Marian for three years, served as treasurer for the SWOBCA (baseball) for 5 years, served as secretary, president-elect, and President for the Southwest Ohio Athletic Directors’ Association, before his current tenure on the Board. Along with Joe Kimling and Phil Poggi, Tom served as a chair for the 2012 OIAAA Conference with the highest increase in attendance in conference history to that point in time. Tom serves as an LTI instructor and is a member of the LTI 502 National Faculty, along with teaching a number of LTI Courses for Ads in Ohio. Tom is the chair of the NIAAA Hall of Fame Committee. In 2018, Tom was named to the NIAAA Mentoring Ad-Hoc Committee after successfully launching SWOADA’s mentoring program in 2017-18. Along with leading SWOAD’s mentoring program for new Ads, Tom serves as the OIAAA mentoring chair, advising and leading Ohio’s six athletic districts. Tom has served as a site manager for various OHSAA tournaments and is the Division 3 Cincinnati Tournament Manager for Volleyball. Tom was recognized as the SW District AD of the Year in 2010, received the Ohio NIAAA Award of Merit in 2012, the SWOADA NFHS Citation in 2014, the SWOADA Distinguished Service Award in 2015, the SWOADA OIAAA Award of Merit in 2016, and the SWOADA Jim Rolfes Professional Development Award in 2018. Tom was named one of ten recipients of the NIAAA’s Distinguished Service Award in 2019.
As AD at Purcell Marian, Tom oversaw the planning and construction of the Roselawn baseball fields for the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, and increased financial support for athletics by implementing the 500 Club. As AD at Mariemont, Tom has implemented the seasonal Meet the Team Nights, academic recognition for JV athletes, The Mariemont Warrior Athletic Council for Sportsmanship, Captains Lunches with the Athletic Director, and Mariemont has received its first three Harold Meyer Awards. Mariemont has earned a number of CHL and district championships during Tom’s tenure.
In a period of funding cuts, Tom has increased private funding for Mariemont High School and Junior High athletics. Tom began selling stadium advertising, raising over $200,000 in new funds. Tom introduced the Men’s Sports Stag, raising over $120,000. Tom has worked with committees to implement a district wide fundraiser with the Mariemont Schools Foundation and the fine arts, to implement a combined fundraiser that raised over$70,000 in its first two years.
All of the athletic venues at Mariemont have received some type of renovation under Tom’s leadership: the renovation of the Natatorium’s lighting and ventilation systems, as well as the addition of a sound system, with the majority of the funding from private donations; the district’s high school gymnasium was renovated with a new, state of the art MVP Flooring System from Robbins, the first installation of this type of floor, and bleachers through working with vendors and sponsors to help defray the costs to the district; the district’s baseball and softball fields have seen a complete renovation that continues today; the elementary school gymnasium has been refitted with new backboards, sound system, and restored playing surface through private donations; the track at Mariemont High School was renovated. In 2011, Tom oversaw a $165000 capital campaign to help the Mariemont Boosters pay for their share of the turf replacement in Kusel Stadium, and by working with the district staff and local suppliers, was able to build a new pressbox in the stadium.
Along with his athletic director responsibilities, Tom has served as the Cincinnati Recreation Commission’s Men’s Baseball Director, as a Board Member for the City of Norwood Recreation Department, and an advisor to the Cincinnati Reds Rookie Success League in its’ Inaugural Season. Tom and Julie have three children.
